PokemonGo and the benefits of getting active

Home » MOTIVATION & SELF LOVE » PokemonGo and the benefits of getting active

You must have heard about the PokemonGo launch in the UK last week? It has been so popular especially with the younger generation. I think it is a fantastic idea getting people out and about and more active in our increasingly sedentary lifestyles.

Some research has shown a significant increase in activity and distance covering up to 5 Kilometres more a day plus improving health; specifically mental health! People are getting out more and meeting new people, experiencing their surroundings more and creating a community of like minded people.

Moving more is so important to your health not just physically but mentally too.

Here are some more of the benefits to your health when you move more:

  1. Improves concentration and creativity as well as overall performance.
  2. Exercise can improve stress and anxiety levels making you feel calmer and happier.
  3. Strengthens bones and improves muscle strength and tone. Reduces the risks of osteoporosis.
  4. Keeps joints more flexible and may help to reduce aches and pains.
  5. Improves posture and flexibility.
  6. Reduces the risk of developing heart disease and stroke.
  7. Improves circulation of the blood, helps lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol.
  8. Helps lower blood pressure.
  9. Controls your appetite and improves digestion.
  10. Reduces the risk of developing illnesses.
  11. Helps to maintain a healthy body weight.
  12. Helps you sleep better.

A FitBit is another fantastic tool for this too through monitoring your steps it encourages you to make that extra effort to get up and about even if it is just taking the stairs instead of the lift at work!

Aim for 10,000 steps a day

Walking more is a great way to get more active as it is low impact and easy to do. Whether it is taking a walk on your lunch break at work or a leisurely stroll at night… every little counts!

A goal is always great to work to as it gets you motivated and you can even make it a competition between friends on some apps.

The average person walks between 3,000 and 4,000 steps per day (NHS website). Don’t be disheartened if you can only manage 3,000 a day in the beginning it is all about building up to reach your goal of 10,000 and as your fitness improves and it becomes your routine this will only get easier!

Is walking enough?

You should do whatever you enjoy. If you are doing 10,000 a day that is sufficient but if you enjoy varied workouts then try a HIIT workout with Rachel Holmes or dancing, there is so much on offer.
